| Description | Swim England have created the ‘swimming competency challenge’ to showcase the four key competencies: - Perform a star float for 60 seconds; -Tread water for at least 30 seconds; -Have experience of swimming in clothing; - Swim at least 100 metres with ease and without stopping. Swim England gathered together a group of parents whose children are currently learning to swim to see how they got on. The pre and post-challenge interviews are enlightening, showcasing their perception of water competency and the reality of it. |

What Makes for Good Safeguarding Practice in Sport? Michelle North, NSPCC CPSU
This Edge Hill University event on 4 May 2022 in part of the the series of ISR’s ‘What Makes A Good Society?’ sessions which are intended to engage the public, professionals and practitioners as well as academics. This session welcomed Michelle North who discusses how we can move safeguarding from simple compliance to a more positive safeguarding culture across an organisation which improves outcomes for all. The fact that sport and physical activity can be a force for good will contribute massively to a ‘good society’. The session is introduced by Dr Victoria Foster, Associate Director of the Institute for Social Responsibility (ISR) at Edge Hill University.
UK Sport and Sport England outline increased safeguarding and welfare plans for all sports
News item 16 Jan 2023: The two largest sporting bodies responsible for funding elite and grassroots sport in the UK outlined plans to strengthen safeguarding and welfare across all sports. The move by UK Sport and Sport England is in response to the shocking findings of the Whyte Review, which was published last June. It revealed the often sickening lengths at which young gymnasts were being bullied, starved, and physically and mentally abused by those entrusted with their safety and welfare, their coaches. The Whyte Review suggests over 3,500 complaints were made to British Gymnastics between 2008 and 2020. While British Gymnastics is undergoing a long process of reform with oversight from both UK Sport and Sport England, it was acknowledged in the aftermath of the Whyte Review that strengthening safeguarding and welfare should not be confined just to gymnastics, but all sports.

How to manage your mental health | Leon Taylor
Prolonged psychological stress is the enemy of our mental health, and physical movement is our best weapon to respond. Leon Taylor is a former competitive diver who competed for TeamGB at three Olympic Games. Following retirement, he transitioned to the commentary booth where he works for the BBC. Leon has a passion for performance, wellness and movement spending much of his time now as a speaker, executive coach, and mentor to the next generation of sports stars. His enthusiasm and skill for mentoring have allowed him to work with a range of athletes across Olympic and Paralympic sports. Most recently playing the role of Athlete services lead at the pre-Games Camp in Brazil prior to TeamGB's record-breakingg 2nd place on the medal table. This talk was given at a TEDx Clapham event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community.

The Big Bang Fair presents Swimming In It
In 2019 British artistic swimmers Kate Shortman and Isabelle Thorpe attempted to recreate their World Championship routine in a pool filled with plastic - a challenged posed by The Big Bang Fair to help highlight how the eight million tonnes of plastic dumped in the world’s oceans every year affects marine life. 2019’s Fair and Competition saq a 14% increase in projects linked to plastic pollution, with youngsters inspired to use science, technology, engineering and maths (STEM) to find alternative solutions and change the world. Girls as young as five years old are being bombarded by messages and labels that undermine their self-belief, crush their confidence, and make them feel as though sport is not a place for them. Research from charity Women in Sport has found girls are hearing and seeing daily messages which imply that they are not as competitive or as good at sport as boys and that they don’t belong in sport.
Learning to love the open water with triple Olympian Keri-anne Payne
After competing in the 800 freestyle, 200 and 400 IM, Keri-anne Payne tried her hand at a 10km open water swim, and went on to become an Olympic silver medallist in the event. Houston Head Coach Tanica Jamison on Building a Successful Team
Tanica Jamison, a proven winner & uber competitive recruiter, has led the University of Houston to two conference titles in her first two years, furthering the Cougars streak of 9 in a row. Prior to UH, Tanica coached the Texas A&M women's team from 2011-2021. As a result of Jamison's efforts, Texas A&M has placed in the top 10 seven times in the NCAA Championships, including two third-place finishes in 2017 and 2018, and four consecutive fourth-place finishes. Jamison was a two-time team captain at the University of Texas and a Big 12 Freshman and Newcomer of the Year in 2000. She also won the program's Leadership Award in 2001 and 2002 and was named an All-American in both 2001 and 2002. In 2003, she was honored as the team's Most Valuable Player. 'How and Why Water Can make you Feel Better' - Dr Catherine Kelly
Dr Catherine Kelly is Senior Lecturer in Tourism, Academic and Wellbeing Practitioner | Tourism Research Centre, University of Greenwich. She presented research synthesis and policy/practice challenges and opportunities for using outdoor swimming and blue spaces for social prescribing and wider societal benefits.
