The Vancouver Open Water Swim Association (VOWSA) organized a webinar on 20 Sep 2020 on "Swimming in Cold Water", with Susan Simmons, Gordon Giesbrecht and Brian Hunt. Susan Simmons from Victoria, B.C, is an engaging ultra marathon swimmer and swim coach. Dr Gordon Giesbrecht. a.k.a. Professor Popsicle, is a professor of Thermophysiology at the University of Manitoba. Dr. Giesbrecht studies human responses to exercise and work in extreme environments. Prof. Popsicle has probably conducted more cold water hypothermia experiments than anyone else in the world. He has also been hypothermic 40 times (and holding). Dr. Brian Hunt is Assistant Professor UBC Institute for the Oceans and Fisheries. Brian's research is wide ranging, spanning interests in the Antarctic, tropical South Pacific, New Zealand, Mediterranean, North Pacific and Arctic. Since moving to UBC in 2006, British Columbia coastal ecosystems have been Dr. Hunt's major research focus.

As a GB swimming coach, Glenn Smith was part of the coaching team that spotted the talent of young Rebecca Adlington. He coached her during her early development years, leading on to her great swimming achievements and becoming double Olympic champion. He coached Paralympic champion Sam Hynd for 8 years. During this time Sam won gold at the 2008 Paralympic Games in Beijing and set the previous world record for the S8 400m freestyle. He also coaches Sam’s brother, Ollie Hynd MBE who has achieved great success becoming British, Commonwealth, European, World and Paralympic champion. Glenn also coaches Charlotte Henshaw, Paralympic silver medalist at the 2012 Pararlympic Games in London and bronze medalist at the 2016 Paralympic Games in Rio.

Teri McKeever: Exploiting Your Strengths for Success

Trailblazing swim coach Teri McKeever has earned an astonishing number of achievements on Olympic and collegiate levels, and she says that recognizing strengths and working hard to maximize them is a path to success. She also advises her swimmers to be creative in how they train and perform in order to reach their goals. Listen in as she shares these and other champion insights with Kelly and Maria. Teri McKeever was the first ever female head coach of the U.S. Olympic swim team, earning this honor at the 2012 Olympics. She is currently the head women’s swim coach at the University of California at Berkeley, where she has served for the past 28 seasons. McKeever has also been a two-time U.S. Olympic team assistant coach, seven-time U.S. World Championships team assistant coach, two-time U.S. Pan Pacs head coach and U.S. World short-course championships head coach. She’s also coached 26 Olympians who have won 36 Olympic medals. McKeever’s UC teams have won four NCAA titles and she’s been voted Pac-12 Coach of the Year eight times. She has won four Pac-12 team titles and coached six national Swimmers of the Year, including greats like: Natalie Coughlin, Missy Franklin and most recently, Kathleen Baker. These are just a few of her NCAA awards and her Golden Bears have captured 65 NCAA individual or relay titles. Bob Bowman is the Head Coach of Arizona State University's Swimming & Diving Team. Coach Bowman served as Team USA's Head Olympic Swimming Coach for the 2016 Rio Games. And, as you already know, coached the greatest Olympian of all time, Michael Phelps, throughout his entire illustrious career. Now, in retirement, Michael cooks Bob dinner several nights a week while he gets to play with the kids. Brett and Bob begin with coronavirus and Coach Bowman's decision to redshirt his entire team. Several years ago Bob gave a speech entitled, "The Characteristics of Champions". In this episode, Brett turns the tables to find out how these characteristics relate to him, Bob Bowman, as a champion swim coach. "How do I become the next Bob Bowman?" - Brett Hawke. Brett and Bob go through each of his champion characteristics: Champions have a clear plan for success in achieving their goals. Champions produce normal and predictable performances in very abnormal and unpredictable environments. Champions rehearse success on a daily basis -- physically, mentally, and emotionally. You can regress or progress each exercise so perfect for all abilities BUT remember technique is key so work according to your ability. This workout is about control and precision. 60 secs work, no rest, repeated twice for a total workout of 6 minutes. 4 second count on the negative phase to add intensity and overload the muscles to help develop strength.
