Seeking your views now on Festival events

Post Publication Note: The survey to gather club views closed at 7pm on 4 May.

With the aim of getting as many young swimmers back racing as possible, Swim England and British Swimming unveiled on 7 Apr 2021 that planning was underway for a national ‘Festival of Swimming’. The network of racing opportunities will consist of largely age group based meets for swimmers within their locality and intends to focus on 100m to 400m distances.

The meets will be held throughout England, Scotland and Wales in long course facilities within a short window between mid-July and early August. Results will then be pooled to create a national leaderboard for age groups and events.

The South West Leadership Group will be holding a meeting on Wednesday 5 May 2021 at 19.30 via Zoom to discuss the Festival of Swimming and hear views on attending such an event at the end of July.

We understand that some of you may well have not or only just returned to training. Athlete welfare remains our main priority.

Regions are also being canvassed about a holding a Festival of Open Water Swimming in September 2021.

Due to the impact of coronavirus over the previous 12 months and current restrictions in place, both events are unlikely to run in the same way as previous years.

We are asking for the thoughts of our clubs and members on the proposed competitions, dates, format and their appetites to support them.

We asked for your views by completing  a short survey which was open for responses until 7pm on 4 May* to enable Kelly Podbury (kellypods07@gmail.com) to review them and give feedback to the Regional meeting.

* if further views are sought after the Zoom meeting we will reopen the survey as appropriate.
