Day Three - 2009 Swimming Championships

A packed crowd at Hutton Moor Leisure Centre at Weston Super Mare witnessed some fantastic swimming on Day Three of the 2009 County Championships, which have rasied the bar in terms of achievement for competitors through the introduction of qualifying times for entry to the competition.

None more so than in the final of the Ladies 100m Butterfly Championships when Libby Mitchell (Taunton Deane Swimming) lowered a five year record by almost two seconds!  Having shaved three hundreths off the record in the heats, Libby lowered her previous time to 1:01.57 in the final.

Stacey Tadd (University of Bath) also continued to impress, winning her second event of the Championships by taking the Ladies 200m Breaststroke.

Another double champion this year is James Disney-May (Millfield) who took the Mens 100m Backstroke Championship whilst teammate James Stone (Millfield) was in a class of his own taking the Mens 400m Freestyle Championship.

The Junior Relay Team Championships produced similar drama to yesterday's team events with Millfield and Taunton Deane Swimming sharing the four gold medals on offer today.  Millfield Boys dominated whilst Taunton Deane Swimming Girls (pictured above) were too strong for any other challengers.  In the boys freestyle relay Yeovil took the silver medal from Taunton Deane Swimming whilst in the boys medley Weston Super Mare struck silver edging Yeovil into third spot.  On the girls side Weston Super Mare took the bronze in the medley whilst Chard took the final place on the podium in the freestyle.

Somerset ASA President Sarah Pusill was pleased to welcome the visiting President of the ASA South West Region Marion Britton (left) and President of Gloucester ASA Sheila Bryant (centre) to present our trophies and medals to today's winners.
