Somerset ASA Young Volunteers Programme 2019/2020 Update

We are excited to provide the Young Volunteer Programme within our County to help develop Young People within the Aquatics disciplines in life skills, coaching, volunteering and all aspects of how a Club works. The Programme is aimed at 15 to 25-year-old volunteers from clubs (aged 15 in school year).

Nicky Taylor, Somerset ASA Young Volunteer Co-ordinator (07889 362605 / has shared the following information with all Young Volunteers and their Club Contacts.

A lot of work has gone into arranging these courses and we have a record number of 22 participants on this year's programme.

We hope all our Clubs and young people will take a look at what is on offer to encourage interest in and preparation for the 2020/21 programme to be announced later this year.

The Somerset ASA Young Volunteer Programme for 2019/2020 runs from October 2019 until the end of July 2020, with 25 hours of volunteering to be completed by the end of July 2020. Volunteering Logbooks will be sent from the South West Regional Office to record young volunteer hours and experiences learnt from each session at their clubs.

As part of the Young Volunteer Programme for 2019/2020, we have arranged some new courses which will also include:

Young Aquatic Leaders Certificate (YALC).

The Young Aquatic Leader Certificate (YALC) aims to develop young aquatic leaders and provide them with the knowledge to volunteer actively in an aquatic environment. The volunteer training is aimed at 14-19 year olds and will support the development of the young leader’s knowledge across the aquatic disciplines.

The YALC is even suitable for young leaders with no prior knowledge of aquatics and will challenge them to work within a team, step outside of their boundaries and will develop communication, organisation, leadership and planning skills.

The YALC consists of a 5 ½ hour interactive theory session followed by a 2 hour practical.

This will incorporate the following over the next 6 months:
This course includes the following modules:
  1. Time Keeping in Swimming
  2. Water Polo Officiating
  3. How to Run a Club
  4. Running an Aquatic Event

This will take place at Bath University, Bath on 8 March and 15 March 2020 from 11.30 - 1pm & 2pm - 5pm on both days.

Other Courses we will run will include:
Alongside the development opportunities and the courses that will support our young volunteers, we will also work together to support both County and Regional Events throughout the year. Young Volunteer Polo Shirts will be awarded to each YV taking part in the Programme to wear with pride at any of the below events:

As part of the Young Volunteer Programme, we will also be holding a celebration event at the end of September to review, reflect and recap on the vital skills that our young volunteers have learnt over the last 9 months. Young Volunteers in Somerset clubs completing the programme will also receive an additional £50 funding from Somerset ASA towards a further course / qualification for their future development.

Our Young Volunteers are asked to look out for the Logbooks arriving soon and let Nicky know if they are able to volunteer at the forthcoming County Champs (if not competing).

Nicky looks forward to sharing more information and welcoming our young volunteers to the YALC on 8 March 2020.

Please download the above update for Club Notice Boards and share within your Club and networks.
