Presidential report: Somerset ASA Water Polo Championships 2019

Kelly Podbury is not only our County President 2019/20 but also our Swimming Competition Secretary. Many of you will recognise it's a busy time of year for Kelly who has been hard at work organising our Development Meet (5/6 Oct at Millfield) and also planning our 2020 Swimming Age Groups and Championships which take place over 7 days (19/25/26 Jan & 1/2/8/9 Feb at Millfield).

We are delighted Kelly has been able to enjoy some time out and still send us the following report.

"I had the privilege of being invited along to the Somerset Water Polo Championships on Saturday 21 September at Millfield.

"When I arrived the first match had aleady taken place between Taunton and Frome, with Frome being the victors.

"Weston and Taunton were playing on arrival and I sat with the Table Officials, trying to understand the intricacies of scoring the game. Having played a bit of mixed Water Polo in my Navy days, I knew what happened in the pool and how boisterous it could be but I have never had the opportunity to see behind the scenes. It was full on!

"Weston won their first match against Taunton which meant the Championships came down to the last match - Weston v Frome. And that high energy game was decided by just 1 point in favour of Frome, the overall victors.

"Mike Coles (pictured) - not only Swim England South West President in 2019/20 but one of the referees - wouldn't have been out of place as a Tic Tac man at horse racing. At one point I thought he would take off, with all the arm waving and whisle blowing whilst walking backwards but alas he was just disqualifying a player. It was all very dramatic!

"Well done to our Somerset Champions, Frome, and a massive round of applause for Taunton and Weston.

"I had a thoroughly enjoyable few hours and thanks for the invite chaps. I hope you enjoyed the post-match celebrations.

"My next Presidential duty takes me to Sheffield over the weekend of 5/6 October with our County swimming team for the National County Team Competition. But that's after I get the County Development up and running.

"I'm looking forward to another weekend of swimming!"
