IMPORTANT - County Volunteer Coordinator and Young Volunteer Programme 2019-20

Post Publication Note: Nicky Taylor is looking forward to co-ordinating the Young Aquatics Volunteer Programme 2019/20 in Somerset and supporting their personal development.

Fiona Bowen, Somerset ASA Secretary has emailed the following to Clubs:

I am delighted to forward the details of the Young Volunteer Programme for 2019/2020 running from October 2019 to September 2020. As you know Somerset have led the field in this and we are proud of how many young volunteers have benefitted from the programme over many years. We have seen some become officials and coaches within our county and beyond with some amazing experiences but the general benefit to the youngsters who take on the programme is immeasurable.

However - and it is a big however - Somerset do not currently have a Volunteer Coordinator and one of their roles is to head up the Young Volunteer Programme.

It is with a heavy heart that I have to announce that if we do not have a Volunteer Coordinator in place by the closing date for applications for the programme - 30 September 2019 - Somerset will not be able to run the programme.

Ever the optimist we are going to advertise the programme and accept applications in the hope that someone somewhere will step up. To this end, as well as the information about the Young Volunteer Programme, I have attached the job description for Somerset Volunteer Coordinator.

Kelly has run the programme with great passion and enthusiasm for many years now, but as well as being our Competition Secretary and the Region’s Open Water Meet Manager, she is also Somerset ASA President this year.  That’s without her commitment to her home club Burnham and of course her family. I know Kelly’s great pride was the Young Volunteer Programme and it is something she has reluctantly had to give up as the enjoyment she got from it was immense. It wasn’t a “job” to Kelly and I’m sure whoever takes this on will find the same.

So please circulate the information about the Young Volunteer Programme but make it clear to your members that without a Somerset Volunteer Coordinator it will not go ahead in the County and encourage them to step forward.

I was at Clevedon & Chard Open Meet recently and there were young volunteers there who were announcing, recording, marshalling and all doing a brilliant job.  It would be so sad to not be able to offer our youngsters that opportunity moving forward. We don’t want to let them down, so please do whatever you can to publicise the urgency of this.

We will of course support whoever takes on the role so they do not need experience in aquatics, just an enthusiasm to help our young volunteers develop and of course, the rest of our volunteers within the County.

If anyone has any questions, please ask them to contact either Kelly or myself - I’ve copied Kelly into this email so you have her email.

If your club does have young volunteers who wish to apply, you will need a mentor in place at your club. Perhaps they could think about taking on the County role.

So over to our clubs - please don’t let our young volunteers down.

Thank you
