Apprenticeship opportunities for local employers

Employers in West Somerset interested in taking on apprentices are invited to a free event to find out what packages are on offer and what help they can expect in the way of funding and support.

Mark Howard of the National Apprenticeship Service will give a presentation about local, regional and national opportunities for employers.

Corinne Matthews, West Somerset Council’s Economic Regeneration Manager, will talk about funding and support. The council is supporting programmes through its Working Neighbourhood Fund to extend training and skills opportunities for local people and support for businesses.

Programmes include:

- Supporting the government’s Future Jobs Fund, which seeks new job placements that provide community benefits for a minimum of six months, which the council can extend. Employers receive an allowance to help support additional training, mentoring and supervision, etc.
- A Business Mentoring Programme, which provides expert advice tailored to a local business’s needs
- A Micro Finance Loan scheme for businesses that have cracking ideas but which have been refused bank loans, or for businesses that need short term crisis loans

Corinne said: “We would like employers from all trades and industries to join us. With new government and local initiatives to support apprenticeships, businesses really stand to benefit from training up young people in the skills they need to grow and prosper.

“It is an excellent opportunity to help nurture young local talent and help young people get the skills they need without having to move away from the area. It is also a good chance for businesses to network.”

Marguerite Bowden, Assistant Principal at the West Somerset Community College, will give a presentation on partnerships, collaboration and training. Jack Fleming of the National Apprenticeship Service will then lead a question and answer session.

The event is being held at the Coombe Restaurant at the Skills and Enterprise Centre, West Somerset Community College, on Thursday, February 11, at 6pm. There will be a buffet on arrival.

Employers will need to book by phoning Vanessa Treloar at the college on 01643 700335 or by emailing VTreloar@educ.somerset.gov.uk
