The START Diving Programme

Now in its third year, START Diving is a Swim England funded programme providing the opportunity for new audiences to try diving for the first time.  It is open to any Swim England diving club or any operator delivering diving lessons.

More than 5,000 children took part in taster sessions during 2017’s START Diving programme, while some 400 went on to sign up for diving lessons.

The programme is flexible in format allowing each club / centre to run the programme however they feel will most benefit their numbers and allow them to reach the widest possible audience.

The basis of the programme is that funding will be allocated to allow clubs / centres to provide free taster sessions to anyone who isn’t already involved in the sport. The structure of these sessions is up to the centre to design – but the ultimate aim is that at the end of the programme as many participants as possible have had a great introduction to the sport and as a result have joined the lessons programme running at the club/centre.

In previous years, some have opted to deliver regular taster sessions each week while others have chosen to run an intensive programme during the school holidays.

The programme also includes the use of centrally produced certificates, pin badges and marketing material such as pop up banners.

Becky Walker, Swim England’s national development officer for diving, said: “This is such an exciting programme and a great opportunity to get more children trying the sport. Last year, some of the clubs taking part saw 50 per cent of those attending a taster session go on to sign up for diving lessons.”

START Diving application guidance

Applications will be judged on the ability of the centre or club to best use the funding to deliver an impactful START Diving programme. These should have the potential to attract and retain high numbers of new participants to the sport.

There is no limit to the amount of funding that can be applied for. However, last year’s successful centres received between £1,000 and £2,000 each.

The closing date for applications is Friday 25 May 2018.
