Swim England South West Volunteer of the Month Apr 2018 - Emily Hurley

Emily Hurley is Swim England South West volunteer of the month for April 2018. She has been volunteering at Taunton Deane Synchro since she retired from synchro over two years ago.

Emily regularly attends twice a week coaching on poolside and helping with land training before swimmers get in the pool. She is always cheerful, encourages all the swimmers and shares her insight into how to perform synchro, having done it herself for many years, which is an advantage.

This year Emily has taken on training the under 12 team and is really getting into coaching on a different level. She does all this with enthusiasm despite holding down two part time jobs and studying full time for an early years degree.

We are delighted to recognise Emily's contribution - she fully deserves this reward for all her efforts.

Volunteer with Taunton Deane Synchro

The Club's aim is to grow and enable swimmers to achieve their potential up to national level. To do this the club needs a dedicated volunteer workforce - all its coaches are currently volunteers.

Training sessions are held in Wellington and Taunton pools. Swimmers are aged between 7 and 18, work on national grades and enter local competitions.  The club woud like to expand and include over 18's in the future and is keen to encourage boys to try synchro. The film "Swimming with Men' starring Rob Bryden will no doubt raise awareness of the sport.

There are many varied aspects of volunteering within synchro - maybe you too can help Emily's club by assisting with
  • coaching poolside
  • competitions as team managers
  • land training and stretching
  • club paperwork
  • managing competition entries.
Support and tuition for any role will be given. And there will be opportunities to do courses to obtain synchronised swimming qualifications in coaching, judging and scoring.

Volunteers will need to give a varied time commitment depending on which role they would like to try - some are only three times a year, others are regular. For coaching they will ideally need to commit to attend weekly. Previous experience with children would be an advantage but is not essential, enthusiasm is more important.

There are social events too!
