UK Coaching Week 2023

5 to 11 Jun 2023

This year’s theme reflects the importance of coaches putting people – their safety, well-being and welfare – at the centre of their coaching practice and learning how to better care for their participants, as well as themselves.

UK Coaching Week Duty to Care

Find out how you can get involved with promoting and delivering great coaching experiences. View details which include a special UK Coaching membership offer.

Take advantage of the IoS making its Foundations of Inclusivity eLearning CPD free during UK Coaching week.

True success in sport comes from achieving a culture of inclusivity and fairness for all. Here's a great place to get started exploring how to include, challenge and meet everyone’s needs within your sessions

Are the efforts of coaches in your Club worthy of wider acknowledgement and appreciation? If so, please can you spare a couple of minutes to nominate them for a regional or national award! Follow the links below.

Quote of the Day

"The reason we are here is thinking, 'What can we do to make this club a better club?' I don't want the guys to think about what the club can do for them."
[Pep Guardiola]

External Funding Tip

Grant bidding is increasingly competitive and complex with the number of bidders rising by an estimated 9% per year. Further to this, funding pots and fixed multi-year grants are not aligned to inflation, meaning they are worth less in real terms than forecast. Making sure your funding bid is comprehensive, professional, and high-quality has never been more important.

Swim England South West and Awards

This year the Region will be running their awards alongside Swim England's National Awards and nominations are now open. View the regional awards categories and submit your nominations.

Safeguarding and DBS

There are countless things Committee members in our affiliated Clubs could be working on, a few things they should be working on, but only one thing that should be their top priority. And that is to offer safe environments for the children and young people who engage in swimming and aquatic sport.

Updates: View Swim England announcements on
- safeguarding training requirements
- new policy on club supervision ratios

View updated guidance from the Child Protection in Sport Unit on safeguarding d/Deaf and disabled children and young people who face the same risks as all children and young people, but are at greater risk of some types of abuse.

Refresher: The Swim England Safeguarding Refresher with Mental Health and Self-harm module has just been launched and is open to anyone who has completed the Swim England Safeguarding CPD since 2020. It is one of three new safeguarding refresher modules that will be released by Swim England in 2023 and gives an overview of what safeguarding and child protection means and how to apply that in the practical situation of a club activity. View details.

Reminder: Without the relevant and appropriate required DBS checks and safeguarding training, you must not be on poolside. If you are unsure whether you need a DBS check or safeguarding training, please consult WavePower or contact your Club Welfare Officer. Click here to book onto a safeguarding course.

Accreditation: The Swim England event accreditation system available via member options is now checking that the barred list check is in place as well as the date this expires. Due to this, members may see an in-date DBS but this element showing as a fail. Should this occur, the DBS was not one with a barred list check. If this is the case, you will need a new DBS for the appropriate role.

Officials

Licensed Meets: With a lot of Somerset clubs seeking to license their own championships or running Meets, Kelly encourages you to use the services of swim-meet.com if you are ever short of officials or volunteers which your Club can then promote via your website and social media.

Website and Social Media

Website: Jan to May 2023 comparison vs 2022: visitors +17%; pages viewed: +5.4%.

While this appears to be good news, it is concerning that in a Financial Year Comparison Apr-May 2023 vs the same period in 2022, both our site visitors and page view totals are just over 7% down.

You can enjoy over 7900 articles, often with multimedia, in our news archive. In addition there are over 3500 curated videos in the library on our website which in total had racked up 5.88 million views as at 31 Mar. You don’t have to be sick to get better.

Social Media: While we do post regular social media updates on Facebook, our use of Twitter is currently paused for safeguarding reasons until the platform’s moderation and compliance standards improve (see Washington Post, BBC News and NPR articles).

It is for other organisations to determine which social media platforms they still feel comfortable supporting. You can check what your Club is tweeting about. View content on our own timelines.
