County Disability Day Events

Avalon at Wells and Kings Fitness at Cheddar stage disability sessions with Somerset ASA

somerset asa logoSomerset ASA are pleased to announce a County Disability Swimming Day to be held on Thursday 22 July 2010.  There are two events taking place - in the morning a session for school swimmers at Wells Leisure Centre and in the evening an assessment event at Kings Fitness and Leisure Centre, Cheddar.

The morning sessions are presented in conjunction with Avalon Leisure at Wells Leisure Centre and ASA South West Region between 9.30am and 12 noon aimed at children aged between 7 and 14 years old - organised by the Somerset ASA Disability Co-ordinator Jo Frith.

The morning will consist of two sessions. The first between 9.30am and 10.30am will be a dry side activity called Target Ball. This is a game played by two teams who are seated on the floor. A Gym Ball is propelled towards each team’s goal line by the teams using smaller balls. It is great fun and the teams will be selected so there is a balance of abilities.

The second session will be in the pool from 10.30am to 12 noon. Those attending will be grouped according to swimming ability and will take part in a swimming session. As part of this session disability talent identification will take place and swimmers will be assessed as to the appropriate level for future participation, whether that be a learn to swim class at their local pool or joining a local disabled swim club or a local Somerset ASA Affiliated Swimming Club.

We are actively encouraging schools to ask parents to come along as well to see what is happening and to talk to the teachers and organisers particularly if they wish to pursue further swimming for their children. Although we are targeting 7 – 14 year olds, we will accept children outside this age range if we have sufficient places.

The Disability Day sessions will take place at Wells Leisure Centre, Charter Way, Wells BA5 2FB.

To confirm your place please contact the County Swimming Disability Co-ordinator Jo Frith on 07810 543048 or by e-mail to jofrith@tesco.net

The evening event is presented in conjunction with Kings Fitness and Leisure Centre and ASA South West Region between 6pm to 7pm in order to search for young swimmers with a disability, to identify and develop potential talent for future Paralympics - organised by the ASA Playground to Podium Officer Lyndsey Hollands.

This session will consist of ability assessment and swimmers must be competent to swim lengths.

The assessment event will take place at Kings Fitness and Leisure Centre, Station Road, Cheddar, BS27 3AH.

To confirm your place please contact the ASA Playground to Podium Officer Lyndsey Hollands on 07909 951896 or by e-mail to Lyndsey.hollands@swimming.org
