Many local clubs are positive and enthusiastic about Masters swimming and offer sessions which are open to swimmers aged 18 plus.

Check out the Club Toolkit for Masters Swimming and other useful documents in the Swim England Library.

The County's Masters Secretary is Rosemary Johnson who has announced she will be standing down at our 2018 AGM after many years service. If you would like to support our Masters community by taking on the role or help organise our team for the annual inter-county competition, please get in touch.

@SomersetASA thanks for letting me represent Somerset Masters team in last nights Inter county gala. I have only recently returned to swimming and was a tad nervous. I really enjoyed it & met some lovely people. Not sure how we did but happy just to take part. Thank you.

We thank Heather Pullinger (pullingerfamily@gmail.com) for putting together a Masters team to represent Somerset in the South West round of the Swim England Inter County Masters Team Championships at Millfield on 19 November 2017. View results of the south west round which placed us 24th nationally. Competition is held nationwide on a Regional basis and in the south west rotates around the six counties each year. The 2018 event will take place on 18 November.

Somerset ASA Masters Championships are held annually with Gloucester ASA, normally at Horfield Pool in Bristol during September but in 2017 the gala at GL1 on 10 December at GL1, Gloucester had to be cancelled for safety reasons due to inclement weather conditions.

County trophies numbered 84 and 85 will be awarded for Somerset swimmer performances.

Please note Masters swimmers will need valid Qualifying Times in British rankings to enter national events. The 2018 British Masters Championships will take place from 8 to 10 June 2018 in the 50m pool at Plymouth Life Centre, Plymouth. The Swim England Masters National Championships 2018 Championships (short course) will take place from 26 – 28 October 2018 at Sheffield’s Ponds Forge International Sport Centre.

Development

Swim England South West held a Masters training day on 11 June 2017 at Mount Kelly pool, Tavistock. The event was open only to members of South West clubs and 27 Masters Swimmers took part on a first come first served basis.

The programme included two 90 minute swim sessions, a presentation by sports psychologist Dr Karen Howells PhD CPsychol ('Using Psychological Skills to Build Confidence') and a Land Training session led by Nye Levett of NL Wellness  which was organised to offer graded exercises for the spectrum of ages and abilities of those attending.  .

The first swim session taken by Greg King in the new 50m 'Olympic Legacy' pool concentrated on drills and stroke technique. The second swim of the day was led by Steve Carder.

The day ended with a question and answer session with Nye and Steve on many aspects of nutrition and training techniques, both on land and in the water.  Feedback on the day and in the follow up evaluation sheets was extremely positive.
