South Somerset Swimmers Make Festive Splash
On Monday 29th December 65 young swimmers from South Somerset attended the 2nd South Somerset Swimming Development Day at the Cresta Leisure Centre in Chard. The swimmers aged between 8 and 12 benefited from 2 swimming sessions on the day including individual medley swimming skills and race finishing techniques. They also took part in 2 gym sessions and a practical lecture on nutrition where the swimmers prepared and sampled foods, snacks and drinks ideal for consumption during competitions.
The development day was organised and run by Alex Pinniger who is a professional swimming coach jointly funded by the Somerset Activity and Sports Partnership, South Somerset District Council and Yeovil District Swimming Club.
Alex said, “I was delighted to see 65 swimmers from South Somerset take advantage of this opportunity during the Christmas holidays. Previously clubs and swimmers have broken up for the Christmas period but to see this level of commitment amongst our young swimmers is very encouraging for the future of swimming in South Somerset.”
10 volunteer coaches from clubs in South Somerset also attended to help run the day.
Daren Emery seen below, a coach from Chard Swimming Club said, “The nutrition lecture was of particular benefit enabling our swimmers to become more aware of foods that maximise their health and performance”.
Daren Rogers, a coach from Ilminster Swimming Club said, “The day was really informative, another great swimming development day. It was thoroughly enjoyed by swimmers and coaches alike. The day built excellent team spirit for those involved in swimming in South Somerset.”
