Free Health Trainer sessions on offer for Weston residents

Adults living in Weston-super-Mare are being encouraged to contact North Somerset Council’s Health Trainer service to receive up to 12 free sessions of healthy lifestyle support this New Year.

Every year the service successfully supports hundreds of local residents to eat healthier, drink less alcohol, lose weight, exercise more and stop smoking.

Weston-super-Mare resident Evonne Smithers started receiving Health Trainer support last year: “I signed up to the Health Trainer service in June 2017 and received one-to-one support from Carmen. I wanted to focus on healthy eating and to become more motivated and I felt that one-to-one support would be better for me, as I had tried diet clubs which didn’t work.

“Initially I felt apprehensive because I had failed before in a class and I was worried that I would let the Health Trainer down. It was easy to apply and I received a call back very quickly. Carmen was very supportive and never judged me. I have noticed improvements in my health such as weight loss, but more than anything I feel less tired and more motivated and believe that the exercise was the key to my success. I love the gym and take part in fundraising for charities through exercise.

“The scheme is great, you have so much support and you are never judged, just pointed in the right direction. The Health Trainer service is a fantastic, free service and it’s not just about weight loss – it has made me feel better about myself.”

Another local resident, Tina Wilkinson, joined the Health Trainer service in October 2017 as she wanted support to increase her physical activity levels. Tina had heard about the Health Trainers through a drop-in session that one of the trainers offered at a local centre.

Tina said: “I really wanted to increase my exercise because I wanted to become fitter and healthier and to start to be kind to my body. My experience seeing the trainer, Debbie, was very good. She was very supportive and I know should I want to do other activities Debbie would give me the support to do this.”

Tina signed up for 12 sessions of one-to-one support to increase her exercise and made use of the Go4Life Get Active Pass to access the gym at the local leisure centre. Tina now visits the gym at least three times a week and also walks everywhere to make sure she is meeting the recommended 150 minutes of moderate physical activity per week.

The other benefits of taking part in more physical activity for Tina were meeting new people, becoming more confident and less stressed. Tina said: “If I could give advice to anyone when trying to change behaviours it would be to take a risk, ask for help especially if you want to have a healthier lifestyle. The Health Trainers are able to give you advice and information and support.”
