The south west girls faced a tough start against one of the strongest teams, losing 18-2 to the North East but a gutsy performance saw them develop as a team.

Their second match against London was really tight for 3 of the 4 quarters before London came out on top 9-2 in the end.

The final game of the group stages against Scotland was a close, hard fought match from start to finish with the girls doing the South West proud, securing an 8-5 win.

A rousing second-half performance saw South West win their 5th-8th playoff game against East Angels 5-3 with  Fountain (1), Jones (1), Webster (2) and Simon (1) on the scoresheet.

A nail-biting last game against East Midland saw Fountain score twice in a tied first quarter. Michela Totolici added a third in the final quarter only for E Midlands to equalise. The penalty shoot-out ended 4-4 taking the score to 7-7. On to sudden death and the South West won 8-7!

Simon Tomlinson said "I couldn’t be prouder! 5th overall is an amazing result for a young developing team.

"All the girls played hard and most importantly their game play developed each match. They did everything I asked of them, and I really hope they had fun!"

North West Thunder won the Inter Regional Girls’ U14 crown for the first time, storming through the group stage with three wins from three, defeating 2015 champions London in the semi-finals before a 7-4 victory over North East in the final.

“We were very proud of the girls for putting in five great team performances over the weekend,” said North West Thunder coach Izzy Howe. “They put into practice the key skills we had developed during our Regional Academy sessions and stuck to the tactics we had prepared, which helped us to control and win each of our games. There is no doubt that having the players together for a tournament like this helps improve their individual performances, as well as those of the team.”
