32nd Golden Bear Meet Day 1 - Gold for Austin and Lye

Somerset swimmers representing England South West consistently made finals on Day 1 of the 32nd Golden Bear Meet in Svetice, Croatia. Bath University's Shauntelle Austin and Co Bristol network's Jasper Lye and Lily Booker produced stand-out performances in a meet featuring athletes from Poland, Hungary, Romania, Slovenia and 16 Croatian clubs

Austin (2:18.07) and Beth Newton (Street, 2:21.81) won gold and bronze in the 200m Backstroke A Final in which Yeovil's Harriet Watts came sixth (2:27.38).

Austin (30.59) and Newton (31.29) had earlier finished fourth and eighth respectively in the A Final over the 50m distance. Watts won the B Final with 30.95.

Adam Chillingworth (2:21.52) and Jasper Lye (2:23.21) had qualified first and second for the 200m Breaststroke. However their positions were reversed in the A final down to Bath Dolphin's Lye producing a massive pb (2:19.29) to finish 0.2s ahead of his Street team mate. Tom Beagley (2:27.87) came eighth.

Lye also came second in the 50m breaststroke B final (30.37).

A 0.37s improvement on her 100 breaststroke personal best to 1:12.61 in the prelims earned Lily Booker a place in the A Final. And the Bath Dolphin swimmer followed it up with another pb (1:12.24) to earn bronze ahead of Kayla van der Merwe (Bournemouth Collegiate School, 1:14.41) in fourth.

Booker also produced a big 2:21.67 pb to finish fourth in the 200m IM A Final in which Kayleigh Parker (Street, 2:24.65) and Molly Francis (2:29.71) came seventh and tenth.

The 200m free A final saw Beth Newton (2:07.57) finish fourth, Evan King (Weston, 2:09.32) seventh and Misty Marshall-Welling (Keynsham, 2:12.33) ninth.

Parker (1:04.56) and King (1:05.69) also finished fifth and sixth in their 100m butterfly A Final.

Frome's Henry Dixon (2:14.53) was eighth in the 200 butterfly A Final  with Tom Downs sixth in 2:08.40.

Dixon also came tenth in the 100m free B Final (55.79) with Will Cole (Co Bristol, 53.67) taking the same spot in the A Final.

Cole (25.93) came second in the 50m Butterfly B Final which featured Downs (26.70) and Dixon (26.92).

There was also a tenth place A Final finish for Clevedon's George Leaman (1:01.18) with Liam White in eighth place (59.03).
